What Are Barndominiums?
A barndominium is a metal building that looks like a barn from the outside but serves as a home on the inside—we call these buildings “bomes,” a portmanteau of “barn” + “home.” Built on a concrete slab using post-frame construction, these structures have become popular for good reason—they're energy efficient, durable, and cost less per square foot than traditional stick-built homes.
The construction method allows for wide-open interiors without load-bearing walls cutting through your floor plan. Ceilings can run high—giving you space that feels bigger than the square footage. You can configure the interior however makes sense for how you actually live, whether that's completely open concept, traditional room divisions, or something in between.
Size depends entirely on your needs and budget. A 40x60 shell gives you 2,400 square feet. A 50x80 provides 4,000 square feet. Some people build compact structures for weekend or rental properties. Others construct large homes with attached workshops or storage areas. The post-frame method works at any scale.
